Most of our candles are purchased by women so we know unlike males, you read the instructions. On the bottom of each of our candles you will find instructions regarding use that pertain to that candle.
Key points to remember is that it is a naked flame. Don't go placing combustible material near it. Also do not burn for longer that the recommended time listed on the bottom of the candle.
I know it can be exciting to light that new Hampton & henry candle but, there are a few things you need to know to bring out the best in your candle.
The first time you light it, burn the candle until wax melts across the entire surface up to the sides of vessel as this will prevent tunnelling, and create an even burn for the duration of the candle's 'life'. This may take up to 2-4 hours dependant on the candle so be patient.
It is very important that you trim the wick before you light your candle. Your wick is already set the first time you light it however before you light it the next time we recommend trimming your wick to approximately 6mm in length.
Keeping it this length will avoid the mushrooming of the wick which can result in unnecessary soot. This also controls the size of the wicks flame allowing you to get the most time out of your candle
Soot is just a natural part of burning anything carbon based including wicks and candle waxes, some more than others.
If soot forms inside your vessel wait until its extinguished and cooled before giving it a wipe out with a damp cloth. Then trim your wick and you're ready to go!
Make sure your candle does not get a build up of matter in the burn pool area. Make sure you remove any cut wick pieces, or any debris from the candle to ensure you get a nice clean burn each time.
If you have ever blown out a candle with force you might have experienced the spray of hot wax that blows across your table, carpet or furniture when you do. Save your furniture and use either of these methods.
1) Dip the wick into the melted wax with an old butter knife or something similar and then straighten wick to prevent smoking.
2) Use a candle snuffer that is placed over the flame extinguishing the flame.
You will find looking into a candle a calming experience and your candles will do just that IF it's in an area that allows it to be calm.
If your candle is in a windy environment the burn time will be decreased, your candle will burn unevenly, increase smoke and deliver a diminished scent throw.
Keep your candle happy and your candle will keep you happy :)
Your candle is happiest when its flame is not flickering. It should be a teardrop shaped and standing upright.
If your candle starts to smoke, flickers or the flame becomes too high then extinguish and let the candle cool, trim the wick, then check for drafts before re-lighting.
Your candle is at end of life is when it reaches 10mm (1cm) from the bottom of the vessel.
Burn it any lower and the candle doesn't have that solid base of wax to support safe burning. The effect is that the flame is then heating the glass jar more than normal that may cause burns if handled or left on a sensitive surface.
For maximum fragrance effectiveness keep windows and doors closed. Light your candle in the room and allow to burn for 30 minutes before entering. Any open windows or doors can rapidly deplete the fragrance in your room.
Candle wax does not enjoy being in the spotlight. Avoid placing your candle where they will be directly exposed to sunlight or harsh indoor lighting, such as a spotlights .
Keep your candles in a cool, dark and dry place when not in use. Keep the lid on when its not burning to avoid fragrance evaporation and dust build up.
